We had a wonderful first day back! It was so much fun to reunite with old friends and to welcome Ridley to the Pawpaw family.

We spent the morning exploring all of the new materials in the classroom and also finding comfort in some favorites from last school year. Rigel read and then reread the story, Little Bee, while Ridley tested out our new “heart bench” and explored other books.

In the park, we headed to one of our favorite spots — the cypress grove. We were excited to find cypress cones (we call them oh-ghees) and used them to play a new game where we throw them in the creek and see if another friend can catch them as they flow with the current. Autumn had a great time in the water! She decided to completely submerge her body and swam around in the shallow creek for a good while :)

During lunch, Sylvie found an inchworm creeping up her leg. She showed everyone how holding the worm was not scary and how when her new little friend wiggled, it tickled. Today, we were grateful for: my mommy, the tops of the trees, the fairies in the trees, my water bottle, and my lunch.

After rest, we climbed a ladder and harvested Asian pears from the backyard food forest. Then, we cut them up and everyone enjoyed several slices. We think they are delicious! We also harvested figs and fennel seeds, both of which we also love.

While waiting our turn to climb the ladder, we discovered two very plump tobacco hornworms. They were humongous! We decided to put one of them in our little bug box so that we could have a closer look through the magnifying lid. We could see the worms eyes!

At the very end of the day, we cut flowers and arranged them in a vase for our learning space. We’re looking forward to seeing if the flowers and hornworm are still alive and well tomorrow.
