We learned how to play a new game this morning called Acorn Soup. We loved selecting a recipe card and then using the tongs to pick up ingredients and add them into our soup. Once we get the hang of the game, we might create our own recipe cards!

The best part of our morning was when Ridley brought four glow-in-the-dark balloons to school to share with us. We had a blast bumping them into the air, running around and trying to catch them before they landed in the “hot lava.” Thanks Ridley!!

During snack, we listened to a story about Chinese New Year. We learned that many people celebrate by wearing red clothing as a way to bring in good luck. We really connected to that part of the story and started noticing red EVERYWHERE. “My socks have some red. I think that will make me have luck.” We even noticed red in the park — “The cardinals are red!! Maybe they have their own bird Chinese New year.”

In the park, we noticed that the creek bed was mostly frozen over. It was fun walking along it, listening for crackling sounds that signal to us the ice isn’t very strong. “If you hear it crack, get off right away!!” Then, we rested beneath some cedar trees — I think we were all really tired from the birthday party yesterday :)

After a little rest, we said hello to the horses. Moonshine snorted at us and we all laughed. We learned that when horses snort, it usually means they are happy.

Back at school, we played with some new toys we found under a tree at the park: a little plastic skateboard, several brand new Halloween erasures, a small slice of dollhouse-sized strawberry cake, a frog finger puppet, and tiny pen & notebook. “We found so much treasure, right?”

During lunch we noticed all of our red foods: strawberries, raspberries, cherry tomatoes, red bell peppers… We talked about how if we eat a lot of the red foods, we might be really lucky :)

After rest, we used watercolors to decorate paper for our Chinese New Year lantern project tomorrow.

We ended the day with a lights-out dance party. It was THE BEST! Our balloons really did glow in the dark and we were thrilled!
