We headed outside extra early this morning to harvest salad greens before it got too hot. We cut a variety of lettuces, microgreens, fennel, cilantro, and flowers. We were very excited about all of the ingredients — “Can we put this in the salad?” “Can I cut a leaf of this?” Then we washed off the dirt and spun the greens to remove any extra water. It was fun pressing the big button on the salad spinner!

In the park, we stoped to admire one of our favorite trees: Grandfather Graybeard. We’ve been waiting a whole year for this tree to bloom again and today was the day! We think the tree should be called Grandfather Whitebeard because the plumes of flowers are actually white :)

In the pine forest, we played with the hammock until the park ranger told us to take it down :-( But we found other creative ways to use the tree straps. We pretended to be pets on leashes!

Back at school, some of us cut out little pairs of pants, glued them onto paper and added in details for the rest of the body. The pants were inspired by a book we all really enjoyed yesterday called, Mary Wears What She Wants. The story is about Mary Walker, one of the first girls to wear pants back when girls were forced by law to wear dresses. She broke the rules, wore pants because they were much more comfortable than restrictive dresses, and was arrested for doing so. The book led to lots of rich discussion around breaking rules that don’t make sense or feel fair, the clothes we enjoy wearing, how boys can wear dresses if they want, and how grateful we are to Mary for changing the landscape around women’s clothing.

We ended the day by making salad dressing, enjoying the greens we harvested this morning, and playing in the backyard!
