december 9

This morning, we were excited to see that our oyster mushrooms had grown quite a bit since yesterday. We took turns spraying the mushrooms with water to ensure they stay hydrated.

We also added two new animals friends to our December calendar — one animal for yesterday (because we forgot) and one animal for today. Then, we counted the days until winter break! We are excited to have so many home days, but also think we will miss each other and the chickens :)

Guess where played in the park? You guessed it — the dirt piles! Today, Ridley discovered that the dark clumps of dirt are actually clay. We had so much fun squishing the clay and shaping it into various objects. Sylvie and Ridley sculpted bird nests filled with duck eggs.

After playing for a while on the mounds, we headed over to the bird sanctuary to rinse our hands in the pond and eat lunch. To our surprise, we found a dead starling bird floating in the water. We watched it for a long time and thought about how it may have died. Then we sang the Itsy Bitsy Spider to help the bird feel better. “This is just like the time we sang a song to that dead squirrel.” Singing to animals that have passed has become our little tradition.

After lunch, we played in the sycamore tree, climbed up into a juniper, and used long sticks to try and lift a giant log (because we thought there would be bones underneath). Rigel enjoyed pretending to watch a Christmas movie near the waterfall.

At the end of the day, we all decided to do stretches on the circle rug and then we went out into the backyard to play. We pet Vanilla the cat for a long time on Ty & Sandy’s porch and then we made cupcakes, muffins, and cakes with sprinkles at the sensory table. We love how kinetic sand is so sticky and squishy :)

Have a fabulous weekend everyone!
