november 16
We spent our morning completing puzzles, creating habitats for our animal figurines using loose parts & art supplies, and enjoying the pumpkin muffins we made yesterday while listening to the second half of a story about a beaver that baked a birthday cake.
In the park, we used our scavenger hunt egg carton to collect and count ginkgo fruits. Each time we found one, we’d count the empty spots to figure out how many more we needed. While we collected fruits, we sang our “Thank You Tree” and “Grandma Ginkgo” songs :) After we filled the egg carton, we ran over to the fir trees to play in the shade because we thought it felt very hot outside.
During lunch, we had a conversation about how each month’s full moon has a special name (or many special names). We learned that November’s full moon is called the Beaver Moon because some native indigenous people would hunt the beaver for its meat as well as its warm, waterproof fur. We also learned that November is the month that beavers begin preparing their winter homes. So, if you spend time near a river, you might see a beaver hard at work. Sylvie told us that there’s a beaver in the movie, ‘Lady and the Tramp’ and that beavers can chomp. Ridley told us that his meatballs were made out of beavers and that meatballs comes from Ikea :)
After lunch, we made our way over to the picnic tables where we collected lots of sticks and used them to build a beaver dam. We are very interested in how beavers make their homes and if they can go inside their dams or if they just sit on top. We’re mostly wondering if their homes are “pokey” inside :)
When we got back to school, we helped clean out the sensory bin, deadhead the marigold bushes, and ate lots of baby kale. We love helping Deidre do all the things grownups do! We also think that the bees will be really happy because now they can pollinate the new flowers that will grow on the marigold plants.
After rest, we made potions!! It was so fun mixing baking soda, vinegar and food coloring & watching everything fizz. Ridley thought the explosion of foam looked like a volcano.
We really missed Rigel and Autumn again today and are looking forward to their return!!
